As Collins said, the animals “collapse in agony at the hands of the Assyrian king who, through the support of the gods and his skill with weapons, brings civilization to the chaotic and disordered world that the animals represent.” In this relief, three horses pull a chariot with two men. The archer is either King Ashurnasirpal II, who ruled from 883 to 859 BCE, or his son and heir, Shalmaneser III, who ruled from 858 to 824 BCE. As was done here, it was common in Assyrian art to depict a fallen enemy beneath the horses of a chariot. This lion has been wounded by three arrows. Some of the most impressive Assyrian artworks are those that show kings hunting lions in an arena which they did in reality. Lions were regarded as the most dangerous animals in Assyria, and depicting a royal hunt relayed the king’s strength and right to rule. As Collins said, the animals “collapse in agony at the hands of the Assyrian king who, through the support of the gods and his skill with weapons, brings civilization to the chaotic and disordered world that the animals represent.” In the relief from which this fragment comes, three horses pull a chariot with two men. The archer is either King Ashurnasirpal II, who ruled from 883 to 859 BCE, or his son and heir, Shalmaneser III, who ruled from 858 to 824 BCE. As was done here, it was common in Assyrian art to depict a fallen enemy beneath the horses of a chariot. This lion has been wounded by three arrows. Caproni and Brother catalogs identified the artist as Pietro Ghiloni. However, there were two artists with that name during the turn of the 20th century: the Italian sculptor, decorator, and marble worker who was active in New York and New Orleans (1864-1932), and the sculptor who was also an assistant to sculptor George Grey Barnard. It is believed the statue was meant to commemorate a Rhodian naval victory, such as that of Myonnisos or the one over Antiochus III of Syria early in the second century B.C.E. The sculpture was located at the Sanctuary of the Great Gods - a fitting place to honor them for their aid and protection. The monument was located in a small building in a niche that was dug into the side of the hill there. The prow of a ship, made of marble blocks, still acts as the base for the sculpture of the winged goddess. The prow may have stood in a reflecting pool to give the appearance it was floating. The statue was likely meant to be viewed from the front left-hand side given its placement in the building and the higher level of detail on the left side of the body. These details aided in her identification. The court artist Thutmose covered the limestone with a thin layer of plaster that allowed him to achieve fine detail in her symmetrical face. Thutmose and other artists utilized the bust as a model on which to base portraits of the queen. On our slightly smaller reproduction, a decorative base was added and the broken ears were restored.
