Also known as L'Ecorche Combattant, this piece was an anatomical study by the Neoclassical French sculptor Jacques-Eugene Caudron (1818-1865). Caudron studied at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Pierre-Jean David d'Angers. A French doctor, Antoine-Louis-Julien Fau, asked Caudron to sculpt the anatomical figure for his book on human anatomy for artists' reference, first published in 1845.
